Assessments
GPES specializes in assessments in literacy (reading, writing, spelling) and end of the year assessments for homeschoolers. Literacy assessments range in length depending on how many aspects are being assessed. End of the Year Assessments for homeschoolers typically take one to two hours. All assessments include a complimentary 10 minutes for getting acquainted. The report can include a list of recommendations upon request. Assessments cost $100/hr. The more organized and prepared you and your child are, the faster they go. Assessments can be done in your home or a local library. There is no travel fee for those within 20 miles of Cambridge; for all others a $25 travel fee applies.
Rachel has been administering literacy assessments since 2004. She has been evaluating homeschoolers’ learning for End-of-Year Assessments since 2009. Rachel has an easy-going demeanor that makes children comfortable even in a testing situation.
For End-of-the-Year Assessments, the learner must present documentation of learning and progress. Some things that can be used are: book lists (those read by the learner and read to the learner), writing samples from various points during the year, copies of letters to friends and relatives, written responses to reading (i.e. questions answered, thoughts recorded, book reviews, etc.), spelling lists and tests, journal entries about learning experiences, math work samples from various points during the year and of various areas of focus (i.e. arithmetic, geometry, graphing, measurement), reports from learning in science and social studies, projects, pictures of projects, artwork, music performances, videos of performances. We can also have discussions about learning experiences, but discussions are not sufficient documentation on their own for most subject areas.
Rachel is currently scheduling Assessments for this summer. Contact her at growthpointsed@gmail.com or call at 802-598-2121 to schedule or for more information.
What Students Say
Rachel has been a great person to work with for my end-of-the-year homeschool assessments. I have been meeting with her for the past several years, and each meeting has been successful. We understand each other, and I never feel intimidated or like Rachel is judging me during the assessments. It feels like a conversation about what I had studied that year. She shows an interest in me as a person. Rachel approaches the meetings in a laid-back way, but I know that she is serious about her work. -Sydney Taft-Cole
